What is a Multi-Project Tracking Template?

Simply put, it's a way for you to keep track of multiple projects at once.

Keeping track of everything you have to do for one project is hard enough. But if you're trying to juggle multiple projects at once, you really need some sort of tool to organize everything so you can keep track of it. And a project tracking template is exactly that sort of tool. Convenient, right?

This template lets you enter your projects, associated tasks, and other relevant information, to make sure you can see all of your projects at once. By seeing a full overview in your project tracking spreadsheet, you can track the progress of each project, ensure that things are staying on schedule, and identify any projects in danger of going over budget *before* they become a problem.

Did you know?

Financial problems from spending too much money are one of the main causes of break-ups, both of relationships and of companies. A project cost tracking sheet can help ensure that you stay on budget and hold things together. Also, try to stay healthy; it turns out that getting sick can be very expensive.

According to a Price Waterhouse survey, 97% of organizations believe project management is critical to business performance and organizational success. Consider how difficult it is to get 97% of people to agree on anything. According to a YouGov survey, fewer than 97% of Americans firmly believe that the earth is round and not flat.

Using a well-built project tracking template can help prevent baldness. Mainly because you won't be tearing your hair out from frustration over losing track of your projects. (It's a bit of a stretch, but our lawyers said we could get away with it.)

How does it work?

This project tracking spreadsheet is designed to let you enter multiple Projects, classifying them by Type and with a stoplight system to track status. The Owner of each product is entered to track who is responsible, and files may be added as attachments. Separate view options allow views organized by type or owner, for easier tracking.

Each project also has an associated Customer, and may have associated Tasks. These two columns are linked to their own worksheets.

The Tasks worksheet lists each Task with its associated Project, as well as the task Status and stoplight status. (Red lights indicate tasks that may require attention.) Each task has a Start date, End date, and Duration, along with fields to enter any Notes or include any relevant Attachments.

The Customers worksheet lists each Customer, along with a Photo of the establishment and other vital statistics such as number of Employees and Annual Revenue. Any associated Projects are populated in a linked column. A heat Rating is assigned based on the likelihood of valuable future projects.

Do I need this fancy multi-project tracker template?

Honestly, it's not that fancy. If you want to see fancy, check out this Project Plan Template. That spreadsheet includes generated charts and graphs and timelines and all sorts of complex methods for managing every aspect of your project.

If your reaction to reading that last sentence was, "I have too many projects, the last thing I need is something complex," then you'd probably prefer something really simple to use that lets you track multiple projects at once. A spreadsheet where you can just enter all of your projects, who they're for, and what tasks are involved. A spreadsheet that gives you a quick overview of everything you have going on, without requiring anything complicated.

You know, something like the multi-project tracking template right on this page.

Who uses Multi Project Tracking?

Project managers who need to be constantly aware of the progress of their teams, in order to allocate resources and head off potential problems before they become kinetic problems.

Team leaders who want to have one central source of data where all team members can enter progress updates, to ensure that an accurate view of current project status is available to be seen any time.

Anyone trying to keep track of many projects at once. Planning and scheduling multiple projects can be difficult without the assistance of the proper tools. A project tracking template helps keep you on budget, on deadline, and makes things more manageable. Which is exactly what you want when you're trying to manage projects.
