Product updates: Up to 10x faster loading times, share by link, and many related row improvements
co-founder & CEO
September was full of new features, enhancements, and fixes. It also marked the end of our early access period, and we're happy to share that we've opened Spreadsheet.com up to public sign up.
Up to 10x faster workbook loading times
We've made significant improvements to workbook loading performance, resulting in up to 10x faster load times. Shaving seconds off of the loading process makes a big difference to the user experience and we’re delighted to share this progress.
Share by link
We're thrilled to roll out workbook share by link capabilities and a new sharing experience. When sharing a workbook you'll see a new “Get link” section. Here you can quickly copy a link to the workbook and change the workbook’s link share permissions from Restricted by user to Restricted by domain or Anyone with the link. More details in our September 18th release notes.
Related row typeahead autosuggest
We’ve launched a long-planned improvement to related row cells allowing you to see suggested matches as you type. You can now also select a value by pressing ENTER and using arrow keys, or clicking the drown-down arrow in the cell, rather than by opening the row selection dialog. This all makes selecting one or more related rows faster and easier. More details in our September 26th release notes.
Wrapping support for pill-style data types
Pill-style data types such as Multiselect, User, and Related row, now support text wrap settings at the column, range, and cell level. When set to Wrap, contents of these cells will now wrap as expected. All rows that have not been set to a specific height will adjust automatically to accommodate the content, as shown below. More details in our October 2nd release notes.
Column formula formatting
Formatting capabilities for Column formula columns have arrived. Now you have explicit and detailed control over the output format of Column formulas. See the new Formatting tab in the Column formula data type dialog.
Related row cascading selection
We’ve made it faster and easier to navigate and select a related worksheet in the Related row data type dialog. Now instead of using a tree, a dynamic cascading series of popups activates on hover.
Related row lookup improvements
Similarly, using the Related row lookup data type is also faster and easier. A dynamic popup menu makes it smooth and quick to select your a column based on existing relationships.
New keyboard shortcuts to select contiguous ranges
Windows: Ctrl + Shift + arrow key
Mac: ⌘ + Shift + arrow key
As in traditional spreadsheets, these keyboard shortcuts now highlight the next contiguous block of non-empty cells, making it fast and easy to select ranges of data with the keyboard.
Fixes and enhancements
We also released over 70 fixes and enhancements, including:
Sign up and Sign in with Google credentials
Improved ability to filter by Current User in User columns
Browser autofill to populate forms is now fully supported in Spreadsheet.com forms.
Ctrl + Shift + Enter (Windows) and ⌘ + Shift + Return (Mac) now wraps an existing formula in an ARRAYFORMULA.
Named ranges Full support for defining and editing names ranges, as in traditional spreadsheets. Today named ranges can be imported as part of existing spreadsheets, and referenced in formulas, but cannot yet be defined and edited within Spreadsheet.com.
Select and Multiselect enhancements We're adding the ability for options in Select and Multiselect data types to be defined from a named range or a manually specified range of cells, similar to how dropdowns are created in traditional spreadsheets with data validation. This will also work on import and export of Excel files.
Related row rollup (new data type) We're working on a new column-level data type designed for use with related row columns for rolling up data from related rows. This will allow you to choose from a set of aggregation functions to use, as well as formatting options, when defining how rollups work.
Zapier integration We’re in the process of being added to the Zapier app directory, which will allow you to create zaps that connect Spreadsheet.com worksheets with over 3,000 other apps and sites.
New template gallery experience We're building a new template gallery experience leveraging live embedded template previews, a "Featured templates" category, and a set of simple starter templates for getting started quickly from an empty Sheet, Gantt, Kanban, or Form view.
